The North American MBE Conference sponsors the following awards to researchers in the field of molecular beam epitaxy:

  • NAMBE YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD
  • OUTSTANDING STUDENT PAPER AWARDS
  • STUDENT TRAVEL ASSISTANCE

Please, see the instruction below for nominating qualified candidates for the first two awards. The nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of previous award recipients and the NAMBE Advisory Board.

MBE Innovator Awards Nominations

We are now accepting nominations for the 2022 MBE Innovator Award and the NAMBE Young Investigator Award. The deadline for accepting nominations is July 15, 2022.

The North America MBE Advisory Board is proud to present The MBE Innovator Award, established in 2004.  It is to recognize individuals whose innovative work has significantly advanced the field of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Individuals must have outstanding credentials, and their innovative work must have had/or be having a significant impact on the advancement of MBE technology in one (or more) of the following four categories:

  • Materials Research
  • Device Development
  • Device Commercialization
  • Equipment Development

The award consists of a plaque and a check of $3,000.

MBE INNOVATOR AWARD FORM

2022 MBE Awardee

Sanjay Krishna, Ohio State University

“For contributions to the MBE growth and development of infrared detectors and focal plane arrays with Type II antimonide superlattice heterostructures”

The nomination of this annual award is solicited from the North America MBE community, and the winner is selected by the NAMBE Advisory Board. The award consists of a check of $3,000 from the NAMBE Advisory Board.

Sanjay Krishna is the George R Smith Professor of Engineering in the ECE department at the Ohio State University. He was previously the Director of the Center for High Technology Materials and Professor and Regents Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Mexico. Sanjay received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering and PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan following which he joined UNM as a tenure track faculty member. Sanjay has received several awards including the Gold Medal from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Defense Intelligence Agency Chief Scientist Award for Excellence, North American Molecular Beam Epitaxy Best Student Paper award and NAMBE Young Investigator Award, SPIE Technology Achievement Award, UNM Teacher of the Year award, IEEE Aron Kressel Award and Ralph Boyer Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.  Sanjay has more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles (h-index=55) ten issued patents and several keynote and invited talks. He is the co-founder and CTO of SK Infrared, a start-up involved with the use of IR imaging for defense and commercial applications. He is a visiting faculty at IIT Bombay. He is a Fellow of IEEE, OSA and SPIE.

NAMBE Young Investigator Award

The North America MBE Advisory Board is proud to establish the Young Investigator Award to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the science and technology of MBE or enabled by MBE by the age of 40 and show promise of future leadership in the field.  The award shall consist of a plaque and a check of $1,000. The deadline for accepting nominations is July 15, 2022.

Administration
The NAMBE Advisory Board will manage the Young Investigator Award. It will be responsible for soliciting and evaluating the nominations and for final selection of the award recipient.

YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD FORM

2022 NAMBE Young Investigator Awardee

Songrui Zhao, McGill University

“For significant contributions to material control of III-nitride semiconductors by MBE, and breakthroughs in photonic devices including DUV LEDs, lasers, and artificial photocatalysts”

Sponsored by the NAMBE Advisory Board, this award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the science and technology of MBE or enabled by MBE by the age of 40 and show promise of future leadership in the field. The award consists of a plaque and a check of $1,000.

Songrui Zhao is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University. His research interests include molecular beam epitaxy of III-nitride nanostructures and their applications to photonic devices. He has published nearly 90 peer-reviewed journal papers (h-index 34), 80 conference presentations (including talks he gave, his students gave, and the talks he or his group made significant contribution to the research), and a few book chapters. His research has received wide attention from news media and has also been included in a number of review papers and book chapters. He is the former recipient of multiple MBE Conference Outstanding Student Paper Awards and the 20th International Conference on MBE Young Investigator Award.

The student awards will be judged by a selection committee consisting of Program Committee members and Advisory Board members at NAMBE 2022. The awards consist of a plaque and a check for $500.

Student Travel Assistance

The NAMBE Advisory Board has agreed to support every registered student who stays at the Conference Hotel with up to $400 credit toward their room and associated tax expenses. It will appear as a credit on your room charge on check-out. This offer is applicable only to students who book their stay in the NAMBE 2022 room block and is on a first come first serve basis until the room block has been filled-up.
